Firstly, you need to thoroughly research the model of MG you want. Reliability, practicality and affordability are often the long-term concerns, so ensure your budget can deliver this. Naturally, you'll also need to consider the type of fuel you will have to use, as well as tax, insurance and general maintenance costs over a long period of months or years. Old used MGs could also need repair work down the line, so include that possibility in a budget too.

Buying used cars privately can turn out a few surprises; while it's usually the cheapest way to buy a used offering, you could get a dodgy dealer waiting to give you the best deal for him - not you. Instead, consider a dealer that could offer a warranty, fit new tyres or offer other little bonuses like 12 months of MOT and tax. Professional dealers also haggle; don't forget this.

Particularly with older cars, it is imperative to scrutinise all documentation that comes with them. Check both current and previous MOT certificates and be sure to consider the V5 document, which lists the registered keeper and not the legal owner. On top of this, many companies provide vehicle background checks that help you learn whether or not a prospective MG has outstanding finance, is stolen or was an insurance write-off in the past.
