ANTIQUES EVENING

It's a relief when the treasurer turns up at a social evening with something other than a demand for subs ! And so it was that Robin appeared on our Antiques Evening with historic items relating to a life saving mission on the high seas back in the 1890s. The medals and certificates told the tale of fine leadership by one of his forbears, who had rescued some forty three crew members of an American sailing ship during a fierce storm. Regular Runnymede members know that you can never tell what may turn up on the night and our October meeting proved the point for following Robin we had John W and his collection of Service memorabilia, some of which featured his father and the communications branch at D Day.

A Carrot Puller ? A Cabbage Pusher ? A Wheel for measuring distance ? None of us recognised Eric's items - all drawn from the collection at the Tilford Rural Life Museum. However we did get the device that made a flat portion of ice cream and located wafers top and bottom. I suspect it took us back to the days when our hard-earned pocket money was wisely spent ! "Sixpenny wafer please mister ". Less familiar were Penny's ebony glove stretching tongs.

RUNNYMEDE & THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

November wouldn't be complete without a performance of one of Muriel's pantomimes , so this year a fully rehearsed cast - Oh no they weren't ! - as I was saying, cast of eight presented "Runnymede & the Sleeping Beauty". Eric played Eric and Pam played Pam but it took no little imagination to see the busy body as Sven Goran Ericsson and the Treasurer as David Beckham. ! To save our readers further embarrassment I'll just leave you with a reminder of part of the finale , sung lustily by all - Oh no it wasn't ! - by all to the tune of "Jerusalem".

And did our cars in modern times

Whizz along England's roads all green

And is our well-loved marque MG

At England's summer shows oft seen

I shall not cease from paying subs

Nor shall my sponge sleep in my hand

'til we have built our Runnymede

In to a great and happy band

SKITTLES & SUPPER

Variety being the spice that 1007 enjoy our November outing was to a skittle supper at Bagshot. Soon the bowls were flying down the alley with great accuracy (Kevin !), destructive zeal (Tony A !) or with gentle demolition in mind (Rosemary !). The members of "A" Team had just won by a small margin when salad, fish & chips, chicken curry, beef stroganoff etc followed by treacle pud and custard walked in from the kitchen. Who felt like exercise after that you may ask ? Well the elimination rounds saw Kevin win the overall prize with Rosemary taking the Trophy for highest score. Our thanks to Pam and Eric for all their efforts in making the evening a success.
