Late Exhausts

If you have one of the late mark IV Sprites with the twin box exhaust you can fit the earlier single box system without any modifications to the car. On the left hand side of the car near the fuel tank you will find a stud protruding from the boot floor by about 1 1/2 inches, which will apparently have no function and will probably be covered in the original underseal. This stud is the mounting for the earlier single box exhaust system. You may ask why you should want to fit this system rather than the later twin box affair the reasons are simple: Firstly the single box system is cheaper and easier to fit, and secondly it restores the so called MG cackle to the car, in other words the cars sounds much more throaty without being overly loud. I would also suspect that there is a small performance increase with the older exhaust but this is speculation. So why was the twin box system fitted in the first place? It was simply because with the single box system the car was deemed to be old-fashioned-ly noisy. I have fitted this system to Dennis and it sounds superb. I haven't really noticed an overall rise in the cockpit noise, but down narrow streets with the roof down I just can't help grinning to myself...
