Weve been invited to Mallory Park on Sunday the 12th October to take part in the last day in the MG Midget Challenge race series by Dennis Wharf of MGCC

No chaps and chapesses, not to race but...

There is to be a free Midget (Sprite too I'm advised) parking area set up at Mallory for about 50 Spridgets. This is a spin off from our fabulous club collaboration to get Spridget 50 on the rails.

All of the various clubs that joined in, and also other interested Spridget owners have been invited to attend the special day at the lovely little track just outside Nuneaton.

I have an email address for the organiser, anyone interested in a fun day out in the Midlands please call me or email me so I can tell Mike a set of numbers.

Lara and I intend being there, (subject to a safe return from our track day on the Saturday)Mallory really is a small friendly race track.

We will have special entry tickets and a parking area near the brow of the hill (near the entrance for those that know Mallory) This is a limited time offer as the entry tickets are based on race entrants tickets and must be declared early. It'll be no good coming down on Thursday and begging Sunday tickets. Numbers to me please. 07984 616371

And for further fun there is a "Power test" at Aldon's rolling road the following weekend in which we are also invited. The fee will be £25 instead of the usual £40.
There will be a couple of fast engined cars for us to run comparisons with, one a fast road/rally car I understand and another is an outright Midget race series car.

Comparisons with these can either make us jealous or smug depending on how our cars normally treat us when we push the "loud" pedal, I am down for this one too. I am already booked up for it.

Lara made a new friend en-route to France

At the ferry port in Newhaven we were in the queue with a Commer caravanette (old H reg!) belonging to some acquaintances from the Club Arnage website and as they were packed to the gunnels and I was travelling single crewed this year I offered a lift to one of them who was painfully perched atop a pile of camping kit in the back of the van.

They had a mini convoy, the Commer and a Porsche so after a calm crossing to Le Havre we set out over the Pont De Normandie with Bob, my new navigator getting comfortable at last.

For a while all was well but the venerable Commer began to show signs that all was not well within her engine room and between Lisieux and Vermontiers she just packed up. After looking around we found the remains of a plastic bag inside the glass dome of the petrol pump, presumably used in the past to act as a stopper after a lost filler cap. If this is so it must have been a long time ago as the present owner knew nothing of it. We cleared the residue out of the way but the pump soon packed up again. Andy the owner had a new pump aboard so we fitted that and after blowing the pipe clear we set off again for Le Mans.

The Porsche driver soon became fed up with travelling at 60mph and shot off, but with the Commer having had a bad start I decided to stick around just in case. After about a hundred miles and with the signs for the 24 Hrs circuit and camping sites in view, it became a good thing that I had. The old bird packed it all in again. Andy managed to get off the highway onto a slip road but as this was in use by juggernauts heading for an industrial zone we decided to get the van off the slip road up the hill. As it was too steep to push the van up (shades of Ice Cold In Alex!!!) I decided to tow it uphill with Lara to a roundabout and a small dead-end road where we could park her safely.

After squashing cries of "You'll never get her up there with that little thing!" I showed the sceptics just what a well turned out Midget was capable of, tow strap fixed around the flats of the rear spring and the front suspension arm of the Commer we made light work of the job and were all able to settle down whilst we made a few phone calls and rounded up a tow from a mate on the campsite in his Discovery.

I had been en-route to set up base camp for our team of Spridgeteers, Gary Lazarus, Toby Anscombe and Bob Tooke, with Bob's son Anthony and friend Dan. They were due on site on Thursday afternoon. Toby was due to be joined on Saturday (at race start time!!) by Rachel and her friend.

All the above had happened on Wednesday evening and come Thursday morning Andy and I set about fitting a new (second) in line filter between tank and pump so any repetition would not stop the van permanently.

After all this the racing was almost unimportant, but Lara hadn't finished showing the happy campers what she could do. On Fridays on the Le Mans 24 hours weekend there is "The Great British Welcome" at the local town of St Saturnin where many of the hundreds of Classic car owners that attend every year go to enjoy looking and chatting about other people's cars and have a congenial meeting with Jazz bands and commentaries, plus a celebrated Car Of the Year. This year's special, oddly for a "British Welcome" was Ferrari.

After the meeting several of us including our own Gary and Toby, (Toby was my passenger for today) went for a trip around the local countryside, guided by a pair of ex-pat Brits to a small bar about twenty miles away. In our small convoy was Gary's Frogeye, a couple of Cobra replicas and the Ferrari (some sort of Fezzer, I dunno!) of another local ex-pat.

I was stuck behind the Ferrari and spent the entire drive wishing I'd set off in front of him. He braked hours before the proper time, steered wide around every curve and Lara spent the whole trip far too close to him.

I wish she had let him go but she didn't have an ounce of pity for him or me!

Lara had taught me how much she could do on the track days we'd done together, so the drive on those French roads let me have great fun using the car's legendary agility.

The racing was very good this year even if the diesels won again, Aston Martin winning their class very nicely. On Sunday morning there was much confusion about which tyres to fit and just about every team got it wrong-ish at one time or another. Due to poor pit work, during the early afternoon Peugeot lost their very strong act in a flurry of bad decisions and so Audi won again

After the race we took ourselves off to our customary watering hole at Bagnolles sur L'Orme for a great meal and the next day we split up to make our way home to our different destinations. Gary and I decided to travel along the main coast highway to Le Havre and his ferry at Boulogne after travelling many miles along dead straight French roads. They were like roads you see in "The Movies", marvellous.

After docking at Newhaven I had a three and a half hour run home with the roof off, reaching home at quarter past three.

And I was very, very glad to be home.

Thank you all, at least it looked as if it was all of you to me.

I firmly believe that the undoubted success of Spridget 50 (and yes what a success it was!) was due to the huge number of MASC members that rose to the bait. "Let's have the biggest collection of Spridgets ever" was the gauntlet Steve Clark threw down to the club at the AGM a year and a half ago and with your total enthusiasm that is what we did.

From the top, with a guarantee of centre page publicity in MASCOT from Barry and from your general air of "yes lets get on with it" I'm certain that the MASC contingent were the greatest percentage of 'members to participants' of any club involved.

The organising group from all five participating clubs met often to expand ideas and begin the actual planning, with different areas of expertise being taken up by the team.

Quite early on into the planning Steve Clark had to step down from the "chair" due to work changes and commitments. We all sidestepped taking up his mantle in favour of leaving Jeremy Cogman holding the reins. Which in retrospect was a very wise move, the event was tirelessly driven forward with Jeremy's enthusiasm and organisational skills to the result we all enjoyed on the 24^th May.

I offered to be "Head Traffic Warden" and be responsible for safely getting the huge number of cars expected off the Warwick/Banbury road without traffic jams.

The plan I put together with the constant enthusiasm from John Bishop at the Events Organisers department at Gaydon seemed to go well, due in huge measure to the enthusiastic help of the volunteer marshalls. The wonderful signposting efforts of Andrew in Yorkshire had the desired effect and not once did we get hold ups outside the site.

From the early days when I measured the car parking available via Google earth mapping I wondered whether we'd get you all in, but a promise is a promise so we gathered as much grass parking as we could into the plan and pressed on.

The 24^th was a tiring day for an old codger like me but at the end of it we on the steering group were very satisfied with what the five clubs had achieved together. Much of the day-to-day organisation drew on the skills of the admin team from the MGOC, under the guidance of Julie Neville, who worked tirelessly to keep us rolling along on the rails and helped me with building up the infrastructure on the weekend.

The Pride of Ownership and Concours competitions were ably policed by

mostly MGCC people and we dealt with much of the important "other stuff". Chris Jackson for instance dealt with the Regalia for the event. Jonathan Whitehouse-Bird did the majority of graphics tasks, designing the second batch of flyers, the Rally Plaques, the posters and the free programmes for the day, all along with getting his baby, EAO back to glorious life for the week. (The first Flyers were the work of Carlo la Duca and got the whole shebang off to a flying start)

AHC were able to bring along some very lovely historic Sprites and Midgets too, a great tribute to our marvellous cars.

This is starting to look like a "Thank you all" speech which it shouldn't so I wont DO any more of that.

On the Saturday morning we had a Green Innocenti Coupe waiting at the gates when I got there. Bill its pilot had come along all the way from the USA and later we had folks from Australia, France, Holland, Switzerland, Germany Czechoslovakia and Scandinavia amongst many others to join us and in general everyone behaved just as we marshalls asked them to with little dissention (we had a minor problem with a marshall sending a bloke in an MGB into the classic car park instead of letting him down on the arena. That wasn't the problem, it was in the ground rules, as I had specified in the briefing papers for marshalls. Mr Don Hayter was very understanding when I explained the reason for his diversion and then allowed him down to give the morning talk, which was very well received by all that attended!)

The only major exception to my rules was a chap in a Lotus that seemed to think his car was Spridget based enough to deserve entry. Me? I'm still not quite convinced but we did have enough room for him within the racing car area so I didn't pursue him when he slipped down the main road, Sprite Way.

In another incident, near the end of the day, I was disgusted to see someone having a moan at a MASC club officer. Not an appropriate time or place for such shenanigans in my opinion, everyone else was having fun!

Can I introduce you to a new website for MG’s and Triumphs...

A few years ago, a Spitfire enthusiast David Lipowski met a group of MG Midget drivers, the Glasgow branch of the "Midget and Sprite Club".

David became the area organiser for the Glasgow/Scottish region of Club Triumph and joined forces with Carson Thomson & his group of Midget & Sprite enthusiasts. The group has become very diverse over the last few years - and I think we love it all the more for its diversity.

Although mainly consisting of Midgets and Spitfires we're an anything goes group and we are often joined on runs by such varied transport as motorcycles, modern Mazda MX-5s etc.

Being a branch of Club Triumph we are naturally always happy to see Triumphs of any description too. As with most car clubs we have a wide range of people and ages involved with the group.

This is a very active group. Its fair to say the group is more disposed to driving and enjoying the cars, though there is plenty of polishing goes on too behind closed doors.

We generally are out driving as a group every month between about March and October with drives ranging from gentle outings to marathon weekend trips to the islands.

Drive it day SS&NB style

A run to Shugborough Hall took place for local members of our club on Sunday the 20^th April 2008.

With weather conditions chilly, almost winter like, only the brave turned out. They were

Everyone had arrived on time and parking had been reserved by the friendly attendant, so far so good. We thought it was strange that we now parked a long way from the house so it was decided to walk to the coffee shop for drinks and then have a walk round the grounds. As we headed for the coffee shop a large but polite security man stopped us and asked for our tickets. Tickets? We all seemed to say together, what tickets? Entrance tickets he says. But we are only going for a cup of coffee! Without tickets of £12 each we were not allowed into the grounds or the coffee shop!

"Mutter mutter mutter" this must rate as one of the most expensive cups of coffee in the Midlands! A quick re-think by John and we all get into our cars and head for the Barley Mow on Milford Common where they served the biggest cups of coffee I have ever seen. Suitably refreshed we said our goodbyes to Andrew and Jeanette, John and Pom and Friends.

The three remaining cars headed by Gavin and Dawn had an impromptu run over the Cannock Chase back roads via Brocton, Hednesford and Slitting Mill. On the way round catching sit of a stag (no not a Triumph but one with antlers!) We even had people waving and cheering as we drove by. We finished up at a walker's/ biker's rest area and not only had more coffee but entertainment as well from the local bird life singing away, not to mention the visiting Woodpecker.

My thanks to all that turned up and especially to Gavin and Dawn who not only telephoned Bill, then lead us round parts of the Chase on a scenic traffic free run.

Healey Driver's club coming from Devon to Spridget 50

Bic Healey is hoping to attend and formally open the event and cut the birthday cake, which is in the shape of a Frogeye Sprite, and join in the other activities

There are also to be talks by Don Hayter who was responsible for the production of the Frogeye Sprite when it moved to Abingdon as well as Mike Garton, prominent Spridget racing driver and author

SS&NB report (again)

More (and I do mean more) from SS&NB

Last month after the Green Man meet on the first Wednesday, Geoff and I took a familiar run across to Sambourne to visit the Warwick's bunch, like the "Wild Bunch" but more of 'em, and had a blinking cold drive home afterwards.

We didn't do much more than that either, I fitted a new red spring to my SU HIF carburettor, courtesy of John Collinson and a three inch stack stub to replace the K&N filter in preparation for my track day next Saturday. Courtesy of Toby Anscombe, the club webmaster, cheers mate! John Collinson provided a Pipercross sock to filter the air intake so next weekend ought to mark a fresh day in the history of Lara my ex-Arkley Midget. We shall see, whilst having buckets loads of fun

On Wednesday night as I arrived at the Green Man for this month's meeting I didn't really have great expectations for a big meeting. I had to wander through the labyrinthine connected rooms looking for the "team" and found them as far away from the door as we can get at the Greeny. We had a central large-ish table, plenty of room there I thought. Off to the bar for a refreshing drop of liquid gold and was joined by nigh on half a dozen extras and after we got back to the table it was full to bursting point so we added another to it to stretch the accommodation.

But this wasn't enough and we had even more additions so many that for the first time in ages I passed the notebook round for a roll-call, sixteen of us, we took over the entire alcove/room/cubby hole.

So much chatter it was impossible to be in every thread, hasn't been that busy for ages, marvellous.

Dave O'Neill and Bill McKenzie (Bill 2 fame, of course) and myself. Phew now my fingers are out of breath

We have decided, at Bob's instigation, that we will be meeting up at Shugborough Hall on Sunday the 20^th of April, this year's Drive Your Classic day. This has become an annual event on the Sunday nearest to St George's Day. If you fancy meeting up with us we intend meeting at the Hall at 1400 hrs.

Bob, in addition to being the MASC database manager is also the SS&NB events co-ordinator and often has good ideas for us to go to meetings. See us anywhere this year and Bob will have been involved somewhere I reckon, he certainly found this as a good low-key event for us. Come along and share the day out. Shugborough was the home of the late Lord Patrick Lichfield, cousin to HM the Queen and famous photographer. His house has been a great place to visit for years. My very first MG based event was there back in 1989. How time flies.

The picture was taken (on film! shock horror!) back in 1989 at Shugborough at an MGOC event. Anyone know any of those cars? It would be nice to see them again at Spridget 50 next month.

I had my latest copy of MASCOT this week and I was impressed, at last it shows a healthy blend of car pictures and pictures of the people that make this a great club. Keep it up Barry, thanks. Just what I have been hoping to see.

"NAVIGATE THIS SITE"

I do however have Blokenav v1

Which means that when Geoff and I went to the MG Spares Day at Stoneleigh I just "knew" the way, of course

Which explains (a bit) how two Midgets and a "tagged along too" MGB were found exploring the back roads around Stoneleigh Abbey on the 24^th February. At one point we even had another but he passed us and made his own sweet way.

I knew from years ago that if we turned off the A45 towards the Stoneleigh signs we could drive up right to the door, what I had forgotten was that, yes there is a right turn to make. But NOT not until we passed the edge of Stoneleigh Village

Oh well with the welcome help of a passing AA man we did find the place, Ahem, "just where I expected it to be" The spares day is great when you are in the event, hall after hall after hall of dedicated MG Car Parking, indoors out of the weather.

Sadly I can't say the same for the event, not as much Spridgetty stuff as I would have liked. Which is grossly unfair to the organisers 'cos I didn't have any purchases in mind before I went and would have rung up "insufficient funds" if I'd seen owt. We did have a good wander around, noting happily that there were quite a few Spridget 50 posters and flyers on display. For many of these I have to thank the help of Alistair Shaw, who trades as Magic Midget Man at shows and autojumbles. He brought me his card as Geoff, and I left the cars in the parking sheds. As fair exchange was deemed to be no robbery I gave him half a zillion Spridget 50 flyers, which he kindly offered to display on the screen of every midget in the joint. Thanks Alistair see me at Spridget 50, I'll get the drinks in.

The club stand, ably presented by the stalwarts of Warwickshire was well presented and a constant stream of visitors kept them and Chairman Nigel busy all day. I had an inlet manifold to sell which the guys from Warwickshire kindly put on their autojumble stall, but it didn't sell. Presumably not many people there were looking for a "rare" MG 1100 twin carb manifold, never mind maybe next time.

Several of our members were at the show, nice to see them all, and Anita and Mark making good recoveries after their terrible crash a few weeks ago. They had a stall selling autojumble and Anita stood out in her bright yellow Spridget 50 cap and top. Very good pre-event advertising though!

When the day and Geoff and I were exhausted we drove home in time for the heavens to open just as we were stuck in the usual traffic around the outskirts of Coventry. Sudden and shattering we hoped it was going to be a short one but it lasted for ages. One of those "shall I shan't I moments" as I debated putting the hood up but safe opportunities on the main road were few so I left it down. It wasn't TOO BAD later but I never got dry again until I reached home. A few slithery moments as my tyres reminded me that old tyres aren't as good for grip as newer ones. Too.

On Wednesday night there were a goodly selection of us in the pub, at the table near the fire, guess who had the chair nearest to the fire saved for him?

Yup, muggins.

Not to worry I am used to taking the heat.

We had a good chat and a visit from Mike, who I often meet at Le Mans made the evening even more of an event, conversation flowed like the beer.

Rounded off the evening with a superb drive home on a quite mild dry night, I'd take nights like those any time

Most of us seem to be ready for Spridget 50, only a couple of months to go now.

Le Mans Sprites - 1968 era

I have found a very limited source for 8 port heads which have been cast from the Sprite at Le Mans in 1968 as well as Sebring and others...

The only info that I have is as follows:
Yes I have a few of these heads left. They are set-up for the stock valve size and have 24 cc chambers. They do have enough meat in the deck to mill for compression. They come ported and polished for power. They require the use of a special cam. The valve sequence is different for the stock stuff. I do have cam blanks with rough ground lobes.($150.00) You can use stock type rockers and valves train components.

Not cheap, but very period.......

the south of Germany, on the border to Austria.

dreamlike mountain landscape. So you will have plenty of possibilities to
drive your car along the curvaceous alpine passes and you will be able to
enjoy the fascinating sight of some wonderful castles.
Anyway it¹s worth the trip. And you can also get to know some of the
bavarian tradition.
So let us surprise youŠ..
In case you have some time to spare after the meeting, it might be a good
idea to spend some more days in the area for holidays.

21st October, a bimble

On the 21st of this month several of the SS&NB members of MASC are planning a gentle ride around the area, similar to one we did a couple of years ago.

BUT ALSO DIFFERENT

We intend to meet near to Frankies and Bennies on Kingsbury Rd Erdington Some people may remember meeting us there before on one February day. We will be meeting at 10.00 AM intending to move off at around 10.30.

We plan a gentle ride into Birmingham along the A38 and A38M to make our way through the Brum Tunnels, as before, then take a left along the course of the "old Birmingham Grand Prix" circuit up Belgrave Road and then back down Belgrave Rd into its Tunnel. From there we will sweep majestically uphill to "Five Ways" roundabout, a well known Brummie landmark.

At this point we will deviate from the route we used the last time by driving back downhill and at the Traffic Lights on the A38 junction we will then return into the Tunnel System and take the A38M back out of the city. The group intend that at the end of the A38M to follow onto the M6 Northwards and bimble gently along to the M54 which heads west towards Telford at Junction 10A M6.

We will stay on the M54 until we reach Junction 3 at which point we will leave the motorway and go left to http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/

At the museum we will visit the stunning new Cold War Exhibit museum, have lunch either at their cafe or restaurant or visit one of the excellent local hostelries for meals and refreshment.

This may all sound very boring but I am putting it here to advise as many of our friends as possible that their attendence is very welcome.

Cosford, as a museum, do allow photography and even their old displays are well worth a trip.

We thought a "more to it trip" than before was called for so this has been plan 'A' all year

Please note:

No racing or rallying is planned

No organised travelling in large groups is planned

And the few of us already committed will be making the journey

Not restricted to any kind of club membership, nor vehicle type...

And we hope it will be warmer this time round

Although its been documented a number of times, this was posted up on the MGOC website; Stuarts rather well done v8 midget.

I've seen it in the flesh and it is every bit as good as it looks - some of the best engineering I have seen for a long time!

Thanks to Alan, we are shortly to have a number of binders for your Mascot back issues. Finally, you can keep your treasured copies safe and sound and worthy of display.

Although not finalized, we should have the costing sorted shortly - More details and how you can order will come shortly..

A series forum - A potential resource?

Morning folks, I had the following email this morning which may be useful for the A Series folk (sorry to the 1500 folk)...

Hello,

I am a member for a UK-based online discussion group called A-Serious (http://www.a-serious.com/)
We are a group formed by primarily Mini owners, but we thought it would be a good idea to build a community around the A-series engine and any of it's automotive hosts. There is a friendly and informal attitude on the forum, but there is a wide range of topics open for discussion, whether it be technical, motorsport or social.

Remember, we welcome any A-Series engined vehicle; Morris, Austin, Vandenplas, MG, Rover, Healey, or indeed any of the kit car manufacturers that have based their vehicles around the venerable design.
