1950 MG YT
This car I bought from another RAF chap in Singapore while stationed at RAF Seletar on Singapore Island in the mid 60s - ideal for carrying our racing kart heaved over the back into the back seat (complete with subsequent hernia...) Paid him 100 pound sterling for it! Eventually traded it to an Army chap for a Mk VII Jaguar. My understanding was it was a 1950 model YT which I can't identify from Websites but was apparently exhibited at the 1950 Motor Show and only 50 of this model were made. Wish I had shipped it back to UK when I left Singapore - especially as the new owner painted it yukky black! Reliable, fun and with character - except in Singapore monsoon rain, when the top leaked quite a lot. Also found while there, a Bugatti 36B dismantled in a local veterinary's back yard (taken to pieces and hidden from the Japanese in the 1940s) which unfortunately he knew the value of and wouldn't sell, dammit! Wonder if it was ever restored and if my YT found its way to Australia eventually as one of the ones you picture, though it does have detail differences. Ronald Fraser, Queensland, Australia

Special built MG once owned by Glenn Newton's father. Glen is looking for any information on this type of car. The car is believed to be specially built for Rollo or Rollie Kingsford Smith as his name was on the original registration papers ( Victoria Australia). A colleague at the MGCC Y Register suggests it may be a Morris 8 Tourer (Special) - update 17/12/98 from Roger Jackson of the Morris Register of Victoria - It seems that it maybe a 1939 Morris 12 Series 3 Tourer. Probably the only one ever made.

The previous owners include Kelly and Mickey Harnett (SD) who restored her engine and electronics and G. W. Hardy (TX). Philip Weeks' MG 1100 I owned this car in 1984, unfortunately due to excessive corrosion in the usual places i.e. sills and both subframes I had to sell it on twelve months later - it was probably then scrapped (shame).

Allan Tucker's 1967 MG 1100
The list of modifications is basically as follows:
The standard 1098cc block was retained, however it was overbored to .040 oversize with Vandervell bearings etc, drilled pushrod buckets, double row T/chain, improved valve train parts.
A 1275cc cyclinder head was fitted with stage two port work done, the cyl block was also ducted to allow the intake valves needed clearance. A 649 full race cam was run with a 45 DCOE Webber carb using long V/stack intakes. The G/box was a standard 1275 unit, however retaining the standard 4:1 ratio MG1100 final drive unit and using a beefer clutch and stiffer diaphram spring.
Some minor flywheel lightening work was done also to allow for 7000 plus redlines.
A full 1275 Cooper S exhaust system handled the outflow gases.
Brakes, steering, suspension and electrics all had major upgrades to handle the performance 'improvements'
Interior had full bank of Sedan gauges plus drivers Paddy Hopkirk bucket seat/harness.
Accesories were H4 headlights, foglights, sunroof, front lowerskirt, interior fan, overhead console, centre console with 8 speaker sound system, digital clock(hmmmm) and 13" Revolution rims with Dunlop SP sport tires.

Bill de la Riviere's MG Metro Cup winning car

Bill writes:
This car has been competing in the MG Metro Cup since the championship was started in the early 1990's. We at, Beech Hill Garage, bought it in 1997 after Malcolm Wiggins had won the championship with it that year.
1998 was our first season and we were lucky enough to be joined by Tiff Needell from BBC Top Gear for a guest appearance at the MGCC Silverstone International Meeting.
I finished 3rd in class B in 1998, 2nd in 1999 and 1st in class and Overall champion in 2000.
My brother David races the sister car which is prepared in identical colours.
Both cars are set up by us at Beech Hill Garage (Reading) and with thorough preparation this car has finished all bar 1 of the 35 races it has entered since we've owned it including winning it's class in the last 15 out of 16 races entered.

The MG Metro Cup enjoys sponsorship from Drayton Manor Park (a Family Theme Park near Tamworth). It is probably the most friendly and cost effective racing championship in UK. It has 3 keenly contested classes: A - Standard, B - Modified, C - Turbo. The championship consists of 12 rounds per year covering circuits all over the country - from Knockhill to Brands Hatch and from Pembrey to Snetterton.
