KA H 5 27740 Here is a picture of a 1958 ZB currently for sale on "Trademe" (Kiwi equivalent of e-bay). The car is located in Helensville, about one hour north of Auckland. It also carries a plate "MGM 511 Motor Assemblies Ltd., Durban South Africa" . The chassis no. declares this Magnette as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) car. It looks as it was assembled in SA, then between 1958 and 1965 reimported to UK and then in 1965 imported to NZ from the UK. The car looks OK from a distance, but closer inspection reveals patches on the chassis and heaps of body filler in all the usual places.
KA L 13 27770 Very standard ZB car, still with trafficators and engine just round the clock for the first time. Major components still original, ususal body restorations over the years. In our ownership since 1989, used for the school run when bringing up the kids and now earning its keep on 12 car historic regularity rallys.

KA TE 13 28394 I am at last able to send you a picture of my car for the website gallery. I had chosen a bright sunny day in the summer, and drove off to a quiet country lane with an impressive country house as a background and took several pictures.  Unfortunately the digital camera had a fault (lines across the pictures) and the images from a mobile phone camera did not show enough detail.  So much for modern technology!  The camera is still not repaired, so I borrowed another to take today's picture...
I have been running the car since 1982 (long before computerised databases and websites).  After some work on the wings and doors, the car was repainted in the original two-tone green scheme in 1983 and is now about due for a repeat.  Over the years I have used the car for a variety of motoring events, family trips and driving to work some days (easy to spot in the car-park).  Apart from fitting seat belts, the car is original specification.

KA A 43 28177 New Zealand I bought the car off an elderly gentleman of 82 yrs who had owned the car for 28 years. As far I understand the car had never been out of Auckland NZ all it's life and been used every day for 52 years. I bought it and drove home a distance of 552kms without a hitch, only ran out of fuel as fuel gage is not accurate. It's a very tired old car needing some TLC which I intend giving it.

KA EE 13 28400 Previously owned by Mark Beckley ( who back in the 80s ran the register ) who sadly passed away earlier this year. Car is rally prepared and completed in the Pirrelli Classic throughout the 90s. Has not run for about 3 years and is a bit tatty but should MOT with a bit of recommisioning. I have owned 3 Magnettes in the past the last one sold in 91.( Varitone APA 37A, I wonder if it still exists ) Good to be back in the fold! PS I used to own founder register member Eddy Edwards magnette FPC 563!
KA LL 13 28597 My newly restored 58 Varitone - at last. In wedding service, summer of 2008. All totally original - no modifications. All parts from The Shortens apart from steel wings from NTG in 1994.

KA BJ 13 28607 I purchased my ZB Magnette in Falkirk, Scotland in 1998. It had been stored in a garage for many years and was rusting away. I completely stripped the car and bebuilt it over a period of 5 years. It has had 7 owners, one of whom sold the original Reg. No. RAM 855 If anyone has any knowledge of the history of this car I would be most interested.

KA TA 23 28661 Loz Scott has commenced restoration using the best of two ZB bodies. Body has obvious rust, while rear had copious amounts of body filler that hid worse corrosion.

KA B 23 29310 Bought second hand from the original owner May 1970 with 95,000 miles on the clock for $450 car (200 pounds). This ZB was my first car at age 18. I still have it and its now got 197,000 miles on it. Resprayed in BRG in 1984.Some bodywork redone -chrome, new leather seats, rust removed and engine overhauled. Won Concors 1985. Since then used for going to work, weddings and fun with the MG club in South Australia.
Original owner was Mr Crawford of Glenelg SA who bought it to travel from Adelaide to his sheep ranch near Broken Hill 400 miles north east of the city. When I bought it, it had about 2 bucket fulls of red dust through the head lining and seats etc. Thirty years ago I taught my wife, sister in law and my sister, my son and others how to drive in it and its still going. KA BJ 13 29372 This Varitone, known as "Yasmin", has been owned by Malcolm Eades since December 1972, so it's not so much car ownership as a deep personal relationship! Originally grey over grey, she was rebuilt in 1994 and resprayed beige over maroon. Originally used daily in the seventies, she now only comes out for pleasure trips. She gets around a bit so she has a 1622cc engine with a gearbox upgrade planned: she's been as far south as Umbria in Italy and as far north west as the Harz mountains in (East) Germany. She is also featured in Anders Clausager's MG Saloons as well as some magazine articles, one of them a very early Classic Cars feature, before she was restored, when she was used to show where all the rust comes through. Webmaster Günter's car was already restored then (by the late Bob Bonthrone) and was used in the same article to show how good the finished job looks.

UNFINISHED RESTORATION DUE TO BEREAVEMENT.
The restoration of this car was being completed to a 'usable' concourse standard and regardless of cost. The financial out lay to date is approimately £25,000, with 100’s of man-hours and four years work to get the car to this stage. Every part of it is either brand new or restored. The re-trimmed interior is of high quality soft leather with contrasting piping. New carpets. All wood has been re-veneered. Disc Brake converted. New wire wheels and tyres. The new engine has never been running. All suspension parts and bushes are new. The axle, 'A' arms castings have been painted - flatted - painted etc to remove manufature imperfections.  The body shell has been professionally restored. There is absolutely no body filler. All panel finishing has been done using lead. Just needs paining and re-assembly of the trims. Only a few weeks work left to do. All parts are complete to finish the restoration.

"It is a parts vehicle, it is beyond restoration. The front grille seems in fairly decent shape. The engine turns over, and looking into the oil fill in the valve cover, the rocker assembly is still shiny. The engine and drive train appear complete and intact. The interior is in very bad condition, as is the frame and anything that was in contact with the ground for many years. The front bumper is inside the car, but is missing all of the chrome."

KA A 41 31962 Named "Nettie" by previous owner, Morry Cohen, of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania who sold her to me in 2000. Originally one of perhaps six Manumatic ZBs imported to the US in 1958. Due to her first owner's frustration with this dubious feature, she ended up in a Pennsylvania junkyard circa 1960,remaining for 25 years before being discovered by Jerry Goguen, then owner of Abingdon Spares of Walpole New Hampshire, and the most complete MG Museum in North America in Westminster Vermont. Nettie was cosmetically restored and placed in the museum for another 14 years. She can be seen in an interview with Mr. Goguen in the video "MGs Across America". She was sold when Mr. Goguen began disposing of the museum and ended up in the hands of Mr. Cohen. To this day, she shows only 15,000 miles on her odometer although her original engine and manumatic transmission have been replaced. Allen Bachelder, New Castle, Virginia, USA.

KA C 41 32278 ebay 11/2008  1958 MG MAGNETTE ONE OWNER CAR – UNIQUE!
What is impressive about this car is that it is a 1 owner car, completely original, that has always been garaged and kept on the road. Notice the August of 2008 inspection sticker on the windshield!
This car (Johanna is its nickname by the way) was purchased brand new by Sven, a New England attorney, who took delivery of it in England and drove it all over Europe on his 3 month honeymoon trip. The car was then transported to the States and it was kept on the road by its loving owner ever since until unfortunately Sven passed just a few months ago. Mackay’s Garage obtained the car from the owner’s widow and made some mechanical improvements (new battery, starter solenoid, rebuilt carbs, flushed the gas tank). But other than that, this car is as original as it gets! Original paint, original motor, original interior, etc. The car is road-worthy and will pass inspection! It runs and drives great, and all the lights work properly!
Other than some body issues with the rockers (which can be replaced with brand new parts still made in the UK) and the right rear quarter panel (the fender was hit at one point and repaired back in 1961), this car doesn’t have any major issues. The floors are totally solid, the doors swing and shut perfectly, the bottom of the trunk strong. The motor runs great!

KA L 41 32990 This car was put away in a barn in Kentucky in 1976, and just pulled out in the summer of 2008. Although the paint is in poor condition, the car overall is very original and should make for an excellent restoration project. It was purchased in the UK, driven, and then shipped to California by the original owner. The car has all matching numbers and documented history including the MG warranty certificate, original UK license plate, shipping invoice, and the name and address of every owner since new. I promised to keep the most recent owners updated on my progress and drive it back down for a visit once it's complete.

KA A 41 32954 When our ZA 13540 ate its main bearings, we faced a expensive engine re-build. Desperate, we tried the rusty engine in our $400, 65k mile, purchased-for-bits, derelict ZB 32954. KA TT 23 33044 For auction at Bonhams 04/2005:
"It is believed that this Magnette spent time abroad before returning to the UK and being registered as ‘new’ in 1961. The car had been stored in garage on a Sussex farm for many years before it was spotted in the mid-1980s and bought by the present owner. It was subsequently sent to a firm of professional restorers specialising in MGs and lovingly brought back to its former glory. Exterior finish was changed from the original brown/cream to the aesthetically more pleasing red/cream traditionally associated with MG. We are advised that the restoration was undertaken between 2000 and 2003, and that approximately £12,000 was spent. Presented in very good condition throughout and reported as driving very well, the car is offered with history file containing sundry restoration invoices, expired MoTs and (copy) old-style logbook, and comes with Swansea V5 registration document and MoT to January 2006.
Estimate: £5,000 to 7,000"
KA BJ 13 33089 I have owned this car since 1981. It had been sitting unused in a garage in Kingston for 8 years prior to that.

KA A 31 33170 Original owner purchased the car new in May 1958 in GB for use while in the service. Returned to the USA in March 1960, and remained in the family as a family car for fun outings and daily driver use until the owner died in 1988. It had the motor replaced with a Gold Seal engine in 1968 with the odometer showing over 90,000 miles. The original owner's daughter took the car with her to Ann Arbor Mi.in May 1988 where it remained in her hands until June 1995. The original Gold seal engine required a rebuild with the odometer showing 15,000 (obviously 115,000 miles) which is not much use from a "factory rebuild" ,only 25,000 miles.  Ms. Lane stated she and her children learned to drive in this car, so she didn't like to part with it.
I now have the car and will continue bringing it back to life.

KA B 41 33180 I have owned my Magnette since 1977. I have always maintained it as best any one can. Six years ago I parked it in the garage and left it untouched for the 6 years. We were beginning a family and they needed me more than the Magnette.  In January 2002 I decided to get the Magnette back on the road. It took about 6 hours, separately, to get it back up & running. This car is mostly complete with as much original as possible. The picture of the Magnette and myself are at my 45th birthday . Buckey in AZ.

KA LL 43 33819 I bought the car almost 2 years ago from a NAMGAR member in New Mexico. In 1950's, new Magnettes were imported from England by a Japanese car dealer. I think about 20-30 cars were imported. These cars were mainly LHD for US soldiers and some of these are now available to buy.
After 1980's British Car Shop imported Magnettes mainly from England, I think also about 20-30 cars.

KA L 21 34152 This vehice was purchased in the former Republic of Southern Rhodesia by a police officer (ID unknown) based in (the then) Hastings, Rhodesia. It was then bought by a person (name known to me) who took it with him to South Africa at the time of Zimbabwe's independence. I then bought it through an intermediary (in 1989) and imported it into Austalia in 1991 - after driving it for a while and then starting a full restoration.  My understanding is that the car was imported into Rhodesia as a fully built vehicle (as suggested by the car number identification code).  The car was (so far as I know) completely original. I have removed (and had re-built) the original engine and have fitted a 1622cc unit I took from a very sad South African donor car which was then donated to local club members for parts. Although I started restoring the car in South Africa, I (and I have lots of excuses) did not complete the project until, with the hard work of one person in particular and advice, parts and support of a number of others, the car was on the road this month and passed the requirements of the local registration authorities (after a full over-the-pits inspection) this week - on the first try.
It is now fully registered for everyday use! John Monico, Canberra, Australia

Joan Evans is one of our special members who is over eighty years old and therefore now qualifies for a free subscription to Enjoying MG. Joan has owned her MG Magnette ZB Varitone since it was bought new in 1958 by her father for her personal use and she has driven the car on an almost a daily basis ever since. The MG sports saloon is still in superb running order and always fires up at the first press of the starter button. The only modifications that have been made to the Magnette are the fitting of an electric windscreen washer and separate rear flashers, as the original rear indicator system was inadequate and hazardous. The Magnette is only on its fourth heavy duty battery from new and has covered 96,960 miles in total. The Magnette is very special to Joan and her husband Roy who says that the wherever they go the MG is much admired by young and old alike.

KA LD 13 34426 I bought this car in mid 2005 at which time it had just had an MGB 1800 engine/rear axle/brake servo fitted. In 2006 I had a 5 speed Sierra gearbox fitted and in early 2007 had both rear wings and section beneath the boot completely replaced and resprayed including work to the rear spring hangers and inner offside wing.
Next on the list, when I get some money, is a disc brake conversion on the front and new springs all round. We use the car regularly and normally take it to France, with other MG's, on holiday each year.

When he retired he brought it west to Ontario. He ran a restaurant and needed money for startup and I became the owner. KA FC 13 35345 The car was registered to Air Vice Marshall Arthur Percy Ledger, who kept it until his death in 1969. I bought it in May 1969 from a family member who inherited the car but didn’t use it.
It was our only family transport for 5 years then failed its MoT in 1974 at which time we decided to buy another car and eventually restore the Magnette. Three houses and many cars later we took it to John Shorten in Norwich in April 2006 and brought it home almost exactly one year later. It has the original engine and the work done was very comprehensive, including the fitting of 2 ‘new’ right hand doors and front wing I had owned since 1970, still in factory primer with the tags attached.
It was taken down to bare metal and re-sprayed in the original cellulose colours. I have new carpets and headlining, as well as new inner door panels still to fit – that will be part of this year’s work but my wife Sheila and I are looking forward to going to Silverstone and other events throughout the year even in its slightly unfinished state.
I advise people that it has been a financial disaster, but only in simple money terms. In respect of an investment in my retirement, which starts in 5 weeks’ time, it will be worth every penny. I attach a photograph for you to see when we got it home last year, then at Sledmere in Yorkshire: Barrie Hope.
KA A 41 35361 I am the 5th owner of this car. This car was sold new in Seattle Washington by Rowland Motors. The Original Owner was Mr. D. Dyar of Seattle. I purchased this car on 23 Jan 2004 for $6500 U.S. from Mark Jones, Mark is partners with a Mr. Tom Mohle, who purchased the car from the original owner. All original tools, manuals and literature were supplied to me. I have all documentation going back to 1960, and can trace all owners including having met the Gentleman who sold the car new at Rowland Motors in Seattle in January of 1959. I had the car repainted at the restoration shop owned by the same gentleman who sold me the car – His partner, who does the mechanical side of the restorations, was the second owner and provided mechanical care for the car for the original owner, and her husband after she passed away. At one point during the painting process, four of the five owners of this car were together in the same room drinking wine and discussing her current state! She is now as she was then; 68 hp 1489cc, 4 speed (3 synchro) trans, trusty reliable drum brakes all ‘round and an absolute blast to motor in!
KAA4135361 is as original as our combined minds can achieve. Many thanks go to Lou Shorten and to Paul Barrow for bits, advice, encouragement and help. Along the journey, Gobby, the folks at NTG, Cecilia at Scarborough Faire, the folks who contribute to the bulletin boards and my dear friends at Autosport Seattle have all stepped in to play their part and contribute to the refurbishment – my gratitude to all! The engine is original and has been rebuilt when she had it (she remembered it was a 'valve job' but couldn't remember what else was done). Was reupholstered, restored and repainted close to 17 years ago and has been sitting in their garage til I bought it because the idiot painter "lost" alot of the chrome he took off. All receipts come with it including all the stuff she bought on her two trips to England to replace what had gone missing and receipts for stuff ordered from England. All the stuff was there and never put together. That's what I thought I would do but didn't get it finished. Now my house is on the market as of two weeks ago so that's why I decided to let it go…
