Sledmere 2006
Over the weekend of the 9th & 10th of July, the Magnette register were once
again kindly invited to attend the MGCC Yorkshire groups annual event at
Sledmere. This was the fourth time in succession that our register had been
invited & this year it was decided to make it the register's main event of the
year due to the fun we have had on the previous three occassions!
First to arrive, were the Shorten's and Mike Hearn. Mike had kindly towed Lou
& John's trailer tent to the event for them behind his ZB Magnette as Lou
& John themselves hade trailered John's 1931 MG F1 Magna (known as "Henry") to
the event behind John's pick up truck. No mean feat when you consider that due
to Lou's eyesight, she is now unable to assist with map reading etc. Well done
to all for such a sterling effort to attend the event.
The first official event of the weekend was the scenic Tour of the Wolds which
once again was another "new" route with very little overlap of previous run's
ending up at the war time Eden camp which was a truley fascinating place to
visit & was much enjoyed by all. Most people spent a few hours here, but it was
really only possible to "stratch the surface" as there is so much to do & see &
was very good value for money.
The weather over the weekend was good on the Saturday, but unforfunately very
mixed on the Sunday morning (being a mixture of heavy showers & then brilliant
sunshine for the whole of the morning), but it did brighten up in the afternoon.
Inevitably, this had an efect on the number of the more local car's that were
probably planning to just attend the event on the Sunday. We did however manage
a respectable 12 Magnettes (not forgetting John Shorten's pre war car in
addition to this), with the break down being 1 ZA, 4 ZB's & 7 ZB Varitones. Well
done to the ZB's who easily out numbered the ZA's for the first time for a very
long time - we know now, they must all be hiding up in Yorkshire!.
Special mention should go to two newly restored cars, both looking very
resplendent after their restorations; namely Richard Sherman's ZBV & David &
Sandra Griffith's ZB now known as "Cecil". Richard's car was finished a while
ago now, but this was it's first outing to a register event. David & Sandra's
car is only just finished complete with a colour change to Twilight Grey. Look
out for DSK 117 & ORX 470 (the ex Geoff Whatton car) in your travels.
Finally, congratulations to Martyn & Ann Collett for winning the register's
Arden trophy having been judged as the best Magnette present. Again, this is a
newly restored car (first register outing Silverstone this year) which looks
lovely in it's green & black colour scheme together with very appropriate 5524
MG registration.
If we are invited agian next year, make sure you attend!.
