Bill Wallis, MG Car Club President

IT IS with great sadness that I must inform you all that Bill Wallis died on the 22nd August after an illness borne with great fortitude.

Bill was an enthusiastic supporter of the MG Car Club and a friend to many since joining in 1949. In his long association with the Midland Centre Bill tried most aspects of motor sport except actual racing. He was at one time very active in auto-testing and was an RAC scrutineer for 10 years. As an RAC Rally Marshall for 22 years he did everything from administration at HQ to standing in the snow on Welsh mountains.

Bill served with distinction as Chairman of the Club from 1980 to 1985 but he will be remembered most for his role as our President, a post that he has filled in every sense of the word since 1996. He was unanimously elected each year at the annual AGM and this was no surprise to anyone who was privileged to know the man.

In writing this tribute to Bill I referred back to a Personality Profile I wrote about him three years ago. In it I wrote;

“Bill is the staunchest of supporters of the Club and all it tries to achieve. He is unassuming, knowledgeable, approachable, friendly and professional but above all, wise…”

Looking back now these words defined the man and what he has meant to his many, many MG friends. Bill was a warm hearted man with a unique style who managed to get on with just about anyone he met. He used this talent, as our President, to guide us through times of difficult Club politics and could always be counted on to provide just the right words of encouragement when they were needed.

His passing leaves a huge void in the Club but his wisdom and kindness will live on as an example of what being a member of the MG Car Club should be all about.

The Club motto is “The Marque of Friendship” but to Bill it was a code of conduct which he tried to live by and instil in all members. Our thoughts and prayers are with his ever supporting wife June and his daughter Louise and family at this sad time.

John Day

MG Car Club Chairman

Summer Sprint Results - 1 August 2010

The Midland Centre held another successful and enjoyable Summer Sprint on Sunday, 1st August. The event was intended to be a 'double-lapper' but efficient organisation meant that we even had time to squeeze in a third run for those who had survived the first two! So, most competitors got their monies-worth. Details of the final times can be found by clicking on the link below:

Volunteer Marshals

As some of you may know, the MGCC Midland Centre organises four principal sporting events during the year – two Trials and two Sprints. The Spring Trial is held at Lintridge Farm, near Ledbury, and the Autumn Trial is held at Burton Dassett Country Park, near Gaydon, Warwicks. Both the Spring Sprint and the Summer Sprint are held at Curborough, near Lichfield.

For all these events, we always need the help of volunteer marshals. Marshalling is not an onerous task (as long as the weather is good!), and many people who volunteer find that they enjoy the event(s) and return in the future.

For those of you who are more local to the event locations, and have people in your groups who might be interested in assisting at any of these events, please ask them to contact the Midland Centre via our central email address – midlandcentre@mgcars.org.uk

Without the help of volunteers, these and other similar events cannot take place, so please give it some thought.

Calendar Of Events 2010

Hopefully, by now all our Midland Centre members should have received a printed copy of our Calendar Of Events for 2010 with the latest edition of 'Safety Fast'. If not, please let us know via our central email address - midlandcentre@mgcars.org.uk - and will will forward one to you. Please note that the printed Calendar is an abbreviated version of that shown on this website, and includes our principal events. Details of other events can be found on the Calendar web page.

We regret to inform you that a couple of errors crept into our printed Calendar Of Events for 2010. On the page entitled ‘Committee and Contacts’, the email address from our Chairman, John Fry, should read – allfrys@yahoo.co.uk - Not 'allfrys@aol.com'

On the same page, the email address for Sprint organiser Dave Ormerod should read – ormerod.david@sky.com - Not 'dave-gay@blueyonder.co.uk'

Please accept our apologies for these errors. If you require confirmation of any other email addresses, please let us know. In case of any other email problems, you can always send your mails to our central address – midlandcentre@mgcars.org.uk – and we will forward them to the correct people.

Midland Centre Regalia

Do you need a new cap to protect your delicate head when driving with the top down? Are you looking for a new polo shirt to show off those tanned arms so redolent of being an MG owner? Well, you could do worse than check out our range of Midland Centre regalia (now referred to as 'merchandise' in some quarters), much of which can have emblems and logos customised to suit your own requirements. As well as the traditional caps and shirts, we can also supply other items, such as fleeces, amongst a large range of clothing, all at very reasonable prices. For further information, please give Paul Hipkiss a call on 0121 550 4280.

Midland Centre DVD - Welsh Rallies 1951 to 1954

The Midland Centre Committee still has some DVDs available showing never-before published film of some of our very first Welsh Rallies held from 1951 to 1954, much of it in colour. We hope that Midland Centre members will take this opportunity to purchase a piece of MG Car Club history, and possibly see their own cars in action nearly 60 years ago! As a value-added bonus, the DVD is introduced by MGCC President Bill Wallis, himself a Midland Centre member and former Committee member, and Bill also provides commentary throughout the DVD. Running time is approx. 105 minutes.

Our price for the DVD is as follow:

UK  -  £11.50

For destinations outside of the UK, please contact our main email address below for further price information. All prices will include package and postage.

We have a limited number of DVDs for sale, and we have already sold over 100 since its launch at 'MG Live' at Silverstone last weekend, to countries as diverse as Poland, Holland and Argentina. So please get your order in today! Please contact our central email address - midlandcentre@mgcars.org - for further details.

Please see our 'Calendar of Events' and the 'Miscellaneous Events' pages for more information on 2010 events. Don't forget to let us have details of any MG-related events you would like to have displayed on this site.
