1998 Christmas Newsletter
Christmas Newsletter

Our thanks to Jacqueline for producing a Christmas Newsletter. (Webmaster)
As you are all well aware, Christmas is nearly here again and the time seems to be literally flying by. Shopping, putting up the Christmas decorations, sending Christmas cards, cooking preparations and many other such things will be keeping a lot of us busy at this time.
MG 1100 packed with Christmas presents!
As the weather has been so mild, I have no doubt also that some of our male Members will have taken advantage of this and will have made the most of catching up, unexpectedly?, with maintenance and repairs to their MGs.
Have you noticed, by the way, as I have done whilst driving around, just how many 'soft-top' owners (and not just MG) are still driving around with their 'soft-top' down. Of course, there are always one or two people in the winter-time who drive around in this way, regardless of the weather but, recently, I have seen several drivers of many makes of sports-car, with their top down on quite cold days (and with no hat or scarf on - they must be mad!!!) More likely, of course, they are just 'posers'. As a 'true enthusiast' friend, as he calls himself, pointed out to me recently (because I have the hard top on my car), it is quite normal, even at this time of the year, to have one's soft-top down provided suitably warm clothing is worn. Suitable clothing, in his opinion is leather flying jacket, leather flying hat (in very pretty colours for ladies) and goggles if necessary. This is very practical, of course, but will not appeal to everyone. Good luck to those who are brave? enough to drive around with no protection for their heads, necks and shoulders, and 'happy driving' to those hard-and-fast enthusiasts who at least have the sense to protect themselves against the elements. I think that I, like most other people, will continue to enjoy the comfort of having the hard-top on and look forward to the prospect of (hopefully) warm summer days and evenings next year. For now at least, we must all be grateful that the weather has been so clement (at least here in the east of England) and make the most of it.
Now down to business. This year, as usual, there have been a whole range of interesting (and sometimes exciting) events published in Enjoying MG and other MG magazines.
Many of you will have been to a MG race meeting at a venue such as Silverstone or Brands Hatch and most of you will have taken part in at least one British-based or continental run organised by the MGOC, MGCC or similar. Many of our own club members will have also followed our 'Club Charmain' Brian Fish, in his progress throughout the season, racing his
MGB Roadster.
No matter what you activities you may have taken part in with the larger established Motoring groups, in the last twelve months our own Cambridge group has again produced some interesting events and varied activities, including some very pretty 'runs' arranged by our own Club Members - Oliver, Geoff, Jeremy, etc. We have been bowling (Ray developed a new 'drop-the-bowl-backward-(preferably-on-Peter's-foot)' movement - very impressive, if not to say hilarious!! By the way, Dave Revell won the bowling competition - well done that man!!
We have had a certain MGF-owner's partner (my husband, John) leading other MG 'Summer-Run(ers) 'up the garden path' or, more correctly, 'tempting them to go off into the woods' on a false trail. It did not work, by the way!!
Sarah won the 'putting' competition at Meldreth - well done Sarah!!
Some of us went on a 5-day trip to Holland and met some of the locals in their own homes. Jeremy found the Dutch architecture and 'plumbing' rather interesting. The scenery was also lovely and we visited, among other things, a wonderful 'Organ' museum - full of cinema, theatre and domestic organs (some absolutely amazing to see and hear). The group this time was not very large, but we all got on very well together and enjoyed each other's company. Although set venues were arranged for each day, 'deviations' from the routes were allowed if someone decided that a particular village was also worth further investigation and everyone else agreed. There were absolutely no differences of opinion, just lots of fun, which made the whole exercise even more interesting and rewarding for us all.
This autumn, in addition to bowling, putting (or was it crazy golf!!) etc., some quizzes were organised - namely: 'Feeley Bag', 'Come dressed as your hobby', Heather's 'Pop & Soaps Quiz' and so on. These are always good fun because there is no onus on anyone to 'have to win'. It is just light-hearted, good fun for all.
Ray has come up recently with a rather clever idea for Midgets, that is, a 'cup holder' which can be fitted to the MG Midget. This can been seen

A new Committee will be chosen in January to represent your interests within the Club. So please come along on Monday, 18th January to elect your representatives OR to put yourself forward as a prospective Committee Member, if you wish. Alternatively, if you have any ideas, or feel you could make some contribution, please tell one of your Committee Members. This will enable the Committee to consider new ideas and put these into action in the future. Our Club is there for its Members', that is YOU, and for your enjoyment - so remember, your ideas could benefit all of us. The venue, by the way, is the 'Cambridge Motel' at Shepreth. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.
All that now remains to be done is to wish you all, on behalf of myself and your present Committee, a very happy Christmas and a healthy, prosperous and wonderful New Year. Don't eat or drink too much (you will regret it afterwards). Just enjoy the festivities with your family and friends and have a safe, happy Christmas holiday.
We look forward to seeing you all either at the 'Lion & Lamb' on Monday, 4th January, 1999 or at the AGM on Monday 18th January at Shepreth.
