Ray's Ramblings
by Ray Bossam

Looking over the past few months we certainly have been fortunate with the weather on all our club runs, a vast improvement on 1998, lets hope that in year 2000 the weather will remain kind to us!! Summer is over, and winter will soon be upon us, so now is the time to check over our pride and joy. Remember to check everything that should be checked before putting it away for the winter. Of course there are those amongst you that use your MG all year round, and I applaud those you that do so!

I often see adverts for MG#s stating for sale etc. 'Dry use only' and wonder (in our weather) the cars cannot have been out of the garage, because as soon as I go out with the hood down on my MG Midget, it always seems to rain!! So how do these people manage 'dry miles' ? Perhaps its poetic licence used to sell to uninformed buyers?

Some Club News
A few weeks back now we had a real good club night, with our clubroom was packed for the Television Soap/Pop Quiz. You would not believe the noisy debate after each question. At one point an armed guard was called in to protect the Quizmistress ( I jest of course!) Our thanks to Heather for all her hard work in sorting out the hundred or so questions.

Another event was the treasure hunt organised by Joyce and Robin Rayner, on which seven cars set of on from our home pub, the Green Man at Shepreth. After a ride through some of the narrowest winding lanes in South Cambs and North Herts we spotted a welcome sight in the distance, the lunchtime pub break. On one of those winding English country lane a couple of MG had a surprise, meeting each other coming in opposite directions, and wondered which was lost!

The destination of the treasure hunt was 'Car Heaven' a classic car event held at a private classic car museum, which I believe is not opened to the public very often. The winners of the run were Jacqui and John in the MGF, with Colin and Tessa in the MG Midget, a very close second. The sun shone as we all wandered around the museum and displays, there was something for all the family from Jazz bands to Go-Kart racing. The organisers also gave each of us a free bottle of wine to take home as a thankyou gesture for displaying our MGs.. thankyou!

Another recent happening was the darts match, when the opposition failed to materialise due to ill health. I think they got wind of our team's motto " We never loose" only joking. So we had a knockout match instead and kept the prizes in the family so to speak. The winners were Jeremy and Dave, who beat Kelvin & Peter in the final. Well done to the winners and remember next time your chalking!!

WWW Statistics of this Web site
by Kelvin Fagan

I though perhaps some of our readers might be interested to see how many people visit the Cambridge and District MGOC each month. Our current daily average is 54 visits, which for a small enthusiast site is pretty good. We continue to make new friends from around the world, but sadly fail to attract new members from in and around the Cambridge area. This for me as the site webmaster is a dissapointment, as one of the sites main aims was, and still is, to encourage local MG owners to come and join our club! Anyway the last nine months figures are listed below.

Go-Karting Challenge

A few months back Jeremy Mustoe was asked to put together a team of enthusiastic characters to enter a karting challenge. Now Jeremy works for for a small company and could not find enough people in the office to put a team together, so he turned to his MG friends for help. So the Mustoe Mauler were formed There were some 14 teams in total, mostly from the building trade, and a lot yoinger looking than the 'Maulers!' After a 2.5 hour endurance race, it was Jeremys MG team that won, and the prize was an impressive shield, which would have to be defended. The other teams looked somewhat surprised at our win, of course we were not, as you all know the club moto is 'Simply the Best'
The first defence of the Karting Challenge Trophy was held on Monday 18th October at Kartsport, ( Caxton, Nr Cambridge) We had a good turn out of people to cheer them on but something said at the pre-race briefing made us wonder. Due to the fact that our team won convincingly last year, this time the rules were more strict in as much that if you so much as sneezed, you could expect a black flag ! which meant a visit to the sin-bin and the resultant loss of a lap or so. Our team ( despite the odd black flag ) gallantly held on to 4th place for most of the evening and despite fierce opposition plus a broken wrist by one member of an opposing team, finished in 4th place, and with some reluctance handed over the trophy to the winners.
We'll get it back next time!!! Well done to Jeremy, Brian, Piers, Neil and Keith.
