Ray's Ramblings! Cambridge to Australia Harrogate '99

Ray's Ramblings

Hello from Cambridge
I passed an MGF driver today, waved, and got a nose in the air response, which got me wondering, had he had a bad day at the office or did he feel inferior driving a new MG! I know that this subject has been chewed over in the passed but I felt somewhat upset that the driver of what I consider to be one of Britain's best names in car history felt it necessary to ignore my friendly wave. Oh well

Having had my modem (connecting my computer to the outside world) affected by Lightening a week ago, I hadn't realised that you don't miss anything until it's gone. This got me thinking!, what are we going to do when they make us take our cherished MG's off the road, because they haven't got Catalytic Converters fitted as published in the press recently? Well thats enough doom and despondency from me.

Recent Events

  • We had a Chairman's BBQ a couple of weeks back, the theme of which was Fancy dress, I thought I'd seen it all, but the effort that some clubmembers had put into it was to say the least mind boggling! Two of our chaps (or should I say Ada & Hilda ) were a sight to behold. I'm sure they had been practising for weeks or had advice from their wives on how to put on make up as the results were astonishing, as were their antics ( Photo's to follow next month ) if I'm not behind bars for sending obscene images to be developed. The food, as always was expertly cooked by our host and plentiful, our thanks to Brian and Rita for a " Simply the best" BBQ.
  • We had three tents and six happy campers at the Southern National (Leatherhead 99) and the weather was hot, the BBQ was excellent and the events on the Sunday were good, so much so that some stayed a further night.
  • Sadly our punting trip on the Cam was rained off, so no report possible. We hope for better weather next time as we do seem to enjoy this annual event of trying to look proficient at punting !

    Cambridge to Australia

Hi! I was just browsing through some of the MG Clubs when I was delighted to come across your site. My wife and I am from Sydney in Australia but lived in Cambridge from 1987 to 1992. In fact our 9 year old daughter lucy was born at the Rosie Maternity Hospital. We were in Cambridge last month and have been back several times since moving back to Australia. We still miss it except for all those small shops that were always such a treat being bought out by the large corporates.

We are the proud owners of a 1969 MGB mk11 which has being fully restored. I drive it to work about once a week but the rest of the time we save it for club runs. We are club members over here and really enjoy the fellowship etc. It never ceases to surprise us that MG people are so friendly wherever we go. Anyway I had better go and tuck the car in for the night. Before we come over next time we will get in contact and see if we can invade one of your meets. (Sure anytime-ed)

    Kind regards Simon Tait

If its true that the sun shines on the righteous then MG owners must be a saintly bunch as they turned up in their thousands for the Harrogate MG event, back on the first weekend of August. This is the third succesive year that the event, organised by the local 'Harrogate MGOC', has been held in the grounds Ripley Castle. Most years the Cambridge & District MGOC have a presence in some form. This year I once more took my annual holiday in the area (2 weeks) with Harrogate '99 making a great start to the family holiday. Two other Cambridge members also made the journey north, Keith & Heather Fairchild, who made a long weekend of it, travelling up a few days before in order to tour the beautiful 'Yorkshire Dales'

Other MG enthusiasts who chose to make a full weekend of the show, enjoyed the best of the weather with a scenic run on Saturday. The large contigent of pre-booked campers ensured that the traditional saturday night 'Fancy Dress Party' went with a swing! Those party goers who might have over indulged with the 'Old Speckled Hen' the night before at the bar, were given are rude awakening with a downpour of rain early sunday morning.

The rain soon dissapeared and by mid morning the skies were blue, and by lunch time it was blistering hot, too hot for me in fact. (I had to seek shelter under a tree, with a beer!) As always there was plenty going on in the main area to entertain, including displays by the local Fire and Rescue Service of North Yorkshire.
The show was declared a resounding success, raising in excess of £3000 for local charities.
The show in 2000, will be Harrogate MGOC's 15th Anniversary event, I for one will be there once more.
I have included just a few of the many photos I took.
