Ray's Ramblings! Want to buy a race car?

Ray's Ramblings

Hello from Cambridge
Well we had another busy month out and about, plus some new members, a warm welcome to Neil & Paul.
I had a phone call recently from someone who had bought a small farm in Hertfordshire who was “Wondering if we were interested in taking away an MGB GT that he had uncovered in a Dutch barn”. I say uncovered because it was literally covered in old straw and other bits and bobs that one tends to store in these barns over the years. Needless to say, the next evening my wife and I hot- footed over to see the cars condition, which was now in a large garage next to the house. The owner had inflated the tires on wires to ease such a move and were still inflated on our arrival ! My first impression was “ That’s no MGB GT that’s an MGB” its condition was, how can I put it, SAD, yet not a complete pile of Junk. As I scrambled around this sad sight I was beginning to mentally measure up my garage for this ( after a new shell, lots of time and cash ) concours MGB.

Most of the parts were present and in reasonable condition for an F reg but as you can imagine not so the floor-pan, a sight which I imagine had frightened whoever started the strip-down. The owner said “ If none of your club members are interested I’ll send it to a breakers yard” I could not let that happen as I’m sure that its restorable, so I offered to get it put on the Internet which he agreed to. ( Thanks Kelvin ) (Any time Ray!!! - Kelvin)
I’ve had seven enquiries so far, and I can wait for an MGA to turn up!
The moral to this account is, go and see any such MG’s if the offer is made.

Club News
Back down to earth now an some of our clubs recent activities:
Our Pitch & Put Evening went well despite the odd thunderstorm which stopped in time for us to test prowess and to marvel at any one who got a hole in 2, then back to our home pub for the prizegiving.

Our next event was the Concours Evening, and despite the cloudburst at the beginning ( which gave every entrant a level footing ). Apart from the ink running on the marking forms, the judges could read the scores which were in biro fortunately as we had 17 MG’s to judge. The winner were:
Best soft top: Robin Rayner's MGB
Best hard top: Derek Ryan's MGC
Best modern: Peter Cowper's MGF
Best car to take home: Brian Fish's MGB GT race car.

It was a great sight to see so many MG's and a treat to have three racing MG's to marvel over, brought along by Brian Fish, Piers Townsend and Andrew Parrott

The 14th July was another Simply the Best event, when a team of five Aces took on the task of winning a Karting Challenge at a local venue, (Kartsport, at Caxton) After 2 1/2 hours of gruelling and gentlemanly driving conduct, they won the Trophy and each took home their own Plaque. Well done to Brian, Jeremy, Neil, Piers, & Roger.

19th July , a Treasure Hunt arranged by Derek & Lesley, started at their home in Landbeach (an old Post Office) with a drive full of MG’s. We were given a route map + questions to answer. On route we saw how “The other half live” at Newmarket racehorse owners Studs, sorry Houses. The run ended at The Five miles From Anywhere, No Hurry Inn at Upware. We gave the other diners something to look at apart from their drinks, i.e. 15 assorted MG’s.
And it didn’t rain................. well maybe just a few spots!
Ok now I’ll stop Rambling on and let you have an update on our club events in next months issue.
