Newsletter - August 1997

Editorial
A newsletter of reduced size this month, (sorry!) what with holidays and changes at work and in general a disrupted timetable , I have not been able to give the newsletter my fullest attention, I'll try to do better next month!

STOLEN!
I have had a request, via the net, to be on the look out for a MGC Roadster which was recently stolen. If you have any information then please contact Chris Wright, there are several contact numbers for him.
Details are below:

STOLEN approx July 18th from Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire
Blue MGC Roadster.
Reg. OCX 810F
Chassis No. GLN11104G
Engine No. 29GRDH1312

Chris says:
"Having the car since my college years of 75 - 79. I took it of the road to restore it in 77. Then in 1980 I came to the U.S. so the car stayed in pieces until 1994, when I decided to restore it."

"Having gone thru' the pains with the guy who was restoring it ... I finally got it in a nice shape last year. Only to have it stolen from the garage of some other trustworthy fellow who was taking care of for me, between trips home.
Its not the value of the car that hurts .. its the loss of an old friend. "

Reward for information.

Welcome to New Members
On behalf of the club may I welcome our latest new members, both who drive MGA's,
Ian Hassard & Steve Twin. I think they have both enjoyed their first encounters with the rest of us, and we look forward to see them again soon!

Haverhill Town Show
This is the second year in a row we have supported this event,* and this year was so much better than last. The new club 'Gazebo' (spelling?) got it first public airing, and we had a fine display of I think about 10 cars, ranging from a TD to MGF Apart from ourselves, there were other 'classics' on display both English & American and of course our own club member Oliver ( who I believe now has a Midget?) who brought along his 1939 Peugeot.
* I have recently obtained some very early editions of the MG Owners Club magazine, and what you might like to know is that even way back in 1982 the Haverhill Town Show was listed in the Cambridge & District's club events list!
Any old Cambridge members out there from the 80's?

This is the first front cover of the MGOC magazine - Enjoying MG - from when it went monthly in January 1981. Previously it had been a quarterly publication - are there any copies of these anywhere?

Boules Night
A fine summers evening , allowing the large group of members gathered a good nights sport. With two sets of 'Boules' and playing to the 'Cambridge Rules' everybody was able to get several games in. Can't remember who won! (I was runner up along with Oliver) but it's the taking part that counts!! Good fun, lets do it again sometime!! The evening also the arrival of the new members, bringing along their MGA's which created a huge ammount of interest in the car park.

Surrey 97
Quite a group travelled down to Leatherhead, for this popular annual event organised entirely by local MG Enthusiasts, hopefully someone will submit a report, but from what I have heard it was another great weekend, well done to the MGOC members in Surrey.

Pitch & Putt Evening
Another great sporting night, with five or six groups of four members making their way around the 9 hole Pitch and Putt course at the Kingsway Golf Centre at Melbourn, Nr. Royston. After now witnessing Jeremy both on the disco dance floor (at recent club BBQ) and on the golf course, I can confirm that he is indeed a real 'SWINGER' I am not sure what the members of the 'Kingway Club' thought as their car park filled up with MG's, but it certainly turned a few heads. Full marks must be given to club member Elizabeth Jackson, who turned up on her bicycle, from Cambridge. ( with a little help from British Rail I might add!) Liz had in fact just cycled a few hundred yards from the nearby station at Shepreth!
