Ray's Roundup

Hello from Cambridge!
Firstly an apology to anyone who went to The Lion and Lamb expecting to find us there, only to be faced with an empty bar as we had moved to The Green Man. This unfortunately was bound to happen due to the Roundups going to press one and a half months in advance. To avoid any future hiccups please phone/e-mail me for current events.

Our new regular meeting place

I had an e-mail last week from an MG owner who has recently moved into Cambs enquiring if he could join our club. He was wondering if he could, because he was selling his MGA and buying an MGF, and did we frown on such cars. My reply was to the effect that no we certainly wouldn't 'F'rown on any MG owners, after all what's an MG owners club for if not for ALL MG's.
One of our members has written an article on his 14 year on/off restoration of an ARKLEY Midget, evidently a labour of love and sheer determination ! It is an article worth reading, and hope to see it in print soon.

Our Easter Monday run to Lower Stondon Transport Museum (see report further down the page) was quite an eye opener with over 300 cars and 50 motorcycles on view in what appears from the road , to be only a row of Greenhouses. They are also building a replica of HMS Endeavour out of reclaimed timbers, it should be quite a sight when it's finished.

Future Dates to remember
7th June Boules competition at The Green Man
12/13th June Le Mans MGOC Travel club
18/20th June Goodwood Festival of speed
21st June Putting at Waddon
27th June Billing Aquadrome MGOC national event
5th July Concours evening at the Green Man

News From The Editor

Ray's Easter Run organised 'at the drop of a hat' , started at Whittlesford Station car park and led us through the back roads, past Audley End House, past the famous 'Fox & Hounds at Barkway, to the Bull pub on the A507 at Cottered. Here, suitable refreshments were ordered and consumed, in a very pleasant environment, and even the sun started to break through the clouds. We then set off for Stotfold and headed for Lower Stondon, passing R.A.F Henlow along the way.

The run finished at Lower Stondon Transport Museum and Garden Centre. The Garden Centre was really quite small but, the Transport Museum proved to be amazing. Cars from the early 1900's right through to modern day, together with a range of cycles and motorcycles were on display.
Many of the Members commented as they walked around 'oh look, I had one of those'. This says something about the age of our Members!! Outside in the grounds, H.M.S. 'Endeavour' (of Captain Cook fame) was being reconstructed from the original drawings. The intriguing thing was to see an modern day fireplace built into the wall of the 'Captain's cabin'. A slight deviation from the original plans, I am sure.
On returning to the car park, where all of the MGs had been parked in a row, we found that we had been joined by a series of bright-plumaged 'bugs', mainly of the Bond variety. I hasten to add, not the James Bond type of car, of course. Overall a very enjoyable day, for which I, and I am sure, everyone who took part, would like to thank Ray and Ann very much for organising it at such short notice.

Club News
A change to our Monday night schedule, for those of you who are not aware of it, is that we will be bowling at Newmarket on Monday, l7th May. For those more recently new, or prospective members, who may not know where it is, I also have produced a map showing the location of our new 'home' pub. If you would like a copy, please e-mail me

In March, some of our members met Dorien and Gerrit de Graaf from Holland at the 'Red House' pub at Longstowe, Nr Royston. Dorien and Gerrit had contacted Kelvin, via e-mail to see if they might be able to attend one of our normal Monday evening meetings, while they visiting England for a few days. Unfortunately, this had just taken place and, therefore, a 'special' meeting was arranged for the following Wednesday. Some of our members, who had brought along photos of their cars for our guests to see, were in turn invited to look at photos of Gerrit and Dorien's M. G. Magnette, which is in the process of being restored. It was a very pleasant evening for all concerned.

After their return to Holland, Kelvin had, apparently, put a nice little article about their visit, to our Club, on the club web pages. I did not see this myself, at the time, but was shown it, by Dorien and Gerrit in Holland, when we visited them.

We (Myself and husband John) had already planned to visit friends in Holland, and were asked by Dorien and Gerrit if we would like to visit them during that week. They were genuinely delighted that so many of OUR Club Members had taken so much interest in them and that Kelvin had gone to the trouble of producing an article about their visit.

At our last meeting, I finally brought along the completed article about Roger Jefferson's restoration of his 'Arkley. 'What is an 'Arkley?'
This article will be published on the www separately (webmaster)
