Well 1998 has finally arrived, I dont about you but I thought this New Years celebration seemed to have a little bit more sparkle!, perhaps people are in training for the the big party in a couple of years time, when we will be celebrating the New Millenium (as if you didn't already know!)
So what is in store for us in the world of MG in 1998?
Will the Rover Group & MG finally confirm its plans for the next generation of MG and its return to the showrooms in the USA? There is still plenty of speculation as to the configuration
of any new MG, that we might see, as always the manufacturer likes to keep everyone guessing!
Two new web sites were launched at the end of 1997 the MG Marque has officallly arrived on the internet. (We, the enthusiasts, have been here for ages!!)
I think they are typical corporate web pages, and provide very little useful info for the enthusiast, so why not visit the new MG & Rover sites and see if you agree with me?
Did you make any new years resolutions?
To give up smoking is perhaps one of the most universal of new years resolutions,
I recently read about an MG owner who was seeking advice on how the best ways to quit the habit. It was suggested he counted up how much he spent a year on cigarettes.
1 pack of cigarettes = About £3
thus 1 pack of 20 per day for....
1 week =£21
1 year = £1092
Yes over one thousand pounds a year!!
In other words spend your money on your other foolish habit, your MG!
Christmas and the New Year period always means party time for the Cambridge & District MGOC.
The annual Christmas Dinner/Party Night was held once more at a hotel in Cambridge,
(The Gonville Hotel) . 50 members attended, most arriving in something other than the MG,
but credit must go to Peter & Alf who turned up in their spakling Red MGB GT.
December 23rd saw a surprise birthday party for our hard working club secretary, Brian Fish.
He arrived home, just 30 minutes before the party, to find a table full of food, secrectly prepared by his wife Rita. Once everyone had arrived, the men folk retired to the garage to view the progress of Brians new project for 1998, an MGB GT, which he is to race in the
Anglia Phoenix Challenge.
Brian had just finished fitting the roll cage, the car already totally stripped out, was also being prepared for spraying, before re-assembling the car for the forthcoming seasons racing.
New Years Eve, and another party!
Club members Keith & Heather Fairchild invited fellow MG'ers to see in the New Year at their home. A line of MG enthusiast, performing the 'conga' was last seen heading back towards Cambridge just after midnight!!
As mentioned above, Brian Fish is about to embark on a new career as an MG racing driver.
After seeing his 'stirling' performaces on the Go-Kart track, I am sure he will be a force to be reckoned with.
Brian will be competing in the Anglia Phoenix Challenge which is a series we have followed closely in the past, on these pages. We will be following Brians progress closely, and we hope you will be able to get along to a race meeting to cheer him on.
We have very few details of the car that Brian will be campaigning at the moment, only that it is a MGB GT. Pictures and full spec will be available as soon possible.
Various members of the Cambridge MGOC will be acting as 'pit crew' at the various circuits, hopefully we can get the whole club to turn out at least one race meetings, perhaps Silverstone.
As a club, in June 1997, we attended the
MGCC's International Meeting at Silverstone, we had a great time, so a return visit is planned for 98, with the added attraction of Brian in his GT!
