The beautiful setting is hard to beat!

The Harrogate show is now in its 12th year, and once again like last year the venue was the magnificent setting of Ripley Castle. This years the event was supported by Appleyard of Harrogate, the local MG dealers. Visitors to the MG show were given the chance to look around the Castle, which is also the family home of Lord & Lady Ingilby, at a reduced rate ( 50% discount ), I took my family on the tour, and it was most enjoyable, with the guides getting the kids invloved, so they did not get bored...it was excellent!

Everything is well organised & laid out, also every visitor is greeted with a smile!

There was a constant stream of MG's arriving, joining the many enthusiast that had camped overnight, like other years the camping area was full. The Show had on offer several arena events for all the family, the show attracts almost as many members of the general public as it does MG enthusiasts, and there is plenty to entertain them! There was also the usual colourful variety of stalls selling such things as local arts and crafts, and of course the MG stalls, selling that much sought after part.

The Harrogate MG Club always use the event to raise a sizeable ammount of money which they give to a local charity. The success of last years event allowed the club to give two thosand, five hundred pounds to the 'Yorkshire Association for Disabled People'. The money enabled four disabled residents from the area to take a holiday in places that they would otherwise have only dreamt of. (Disneyland, Florida) For 1997 the Harrogate MG Club have once more chosen to support the 'Yorkshire Association for Disabled People'.

Brand-New-MGF   Mabel!   White-MGF
Most MG models are well represented from the old & rare to the modern MGF

The MGA pictured above, which many of you will recognise by the registration mark 'MBL 867', was for me the 'car of the show'.  It was the fifth MGA off the production line, it's chassis no.HDE/13 10105. Owned by the M.G.Car company for several years, and used by the Competitions Department.

"Mabel", as the car was known, was driven by the most famous of lady rally drivers and co-drivers of the 1950's.

National Cats Eyes Rally 1956 ( Pat Moss + Ann Wisdom )
Mille Migalia 1956 ( Nancy Mitchell + Fairchney )
Alpine Rally 1956 ( Nancy Mitchell + Fairchney )
Liege-Rome-Liege Rally ( Nancy Mitchell + Ann Hall )
Lyon-Charbonnieres 1956 ( Nancy Mitchell + Dorren Reece )

MBL 867 finnished first or second in the Ladies Class in all International Rallies entered.
Nancy Mitchell won the 1956 European Ladies Rally Championship.

M.G.Trivia!
The M.G. team for the 1956 Mille Migalia weret he first British International motor racing entries to be painted red, rather than British Racing Green.

Why?
It was because railway crossing gates would stay open for red cars in Italy!!!!!

Blue-MGF
This blue MGF has been on the road for just two days!

There were almost 50 provisional entries for Condition & Concours, with quite a few entering on the day. Entries included MG NA Magnette, VA Tourer, several MGA's and an MGF! Walking around the area near the lakeside, I witnessed all the hard work that was being put in, to be rewarded hopefully later in the day (4pm) with a trophy or plaque

All in all another fine show, (my third in a row) I am sure I will return again next year.
This year there was not the usual presence of o6ther member from the Cambridge MGOC, with most members finding themselves away on their holidays, including myself! But I was just starting my holiday, and staying about 3 miles from the event, now thats what I call forward planning!!
