The MG Montego featured not the 1600cc R-series power unit, but a 2-litre O-series engine and a new close-ratio gearbox, which was seen as a pleasant surprise! The S-series engine was a belt driven version of the R-series, and was a 1.6 litre, while the O-series had the same linkage to the B-series and would have probably been used on the MGB if it had lived on beyond 1980. The new engine also featured electronic ignition and electronic fuel injection which were both controlled by a microchip, which ensured that the engine always had the correct timing and fuel to meet the current demands made on the engine by the driver.
The whole was styled as the MG Montego EFi in a similar vein to the other two cars, and it was a good package offering a high degree of operational economy with very good road performance at a reasonable price. The computer-age MG had arrived, and yet also at a price which made the car attractive for the same reasons as the earlier era of MG models.

If the public were amazed by the introduction of the Metro Turbo and the MG Maestro, then everyone was astounded in1985 by the introduction of the MG Montego Turbo! This was, at the time, the fastest production MG of all time, but with the ability to carry four adults and all their luggage over long distances and at a level of comfort and a relative price never before available to MG drivers.
