Grafham Village fete
The 10th September saw some members at the Grafham Village Fete. It was a lovely day for a picnic, the weather being perfect, Barrie's beautiful 1935 M.G. P.A. was the star of the show and was the favourite of the young children for a ride around the field; at 50p a ride he was kept busy, the money raised was donated to the village funds.
Isle of Wight
On Friday the 22nd September Pat, Chris, Alan and Joyce joined forces at Baldock at 0500 hrs (Alan's overdrive chose this moment not to work!), to journey to The Isle of Wight. It was pouring with rain all the way to Portsmouth, wonderful around the M25 but at that time of the morning we beat the worst of the heavy traffic. Arriving at Portsmouth at 0730 looking for a Cafe to quell our hunger and thirst, nowhere open could we find so we headed to the Ferry port at 0750, a bit early for the 0930 sailing, only to be directed straight onto the 0800 ferry. The best cup of coffee ever was obtained on the 50 minute crossing! Once on the Island....still raining....we made our way to the Olde Village of Godshill where we enjoyed a proper breakfast. We then walked around and visited the sights of the village - still in the rain, having Lunch in The Griffin Arms, famous for its maze in the shape of a Welsh Dragon. At 1400hrs we made our way to the The Shanklin Hotel to join the other eighty MGOC members on Isle of Wight Rally. After checking in and a nap we walked along the sea front at Shanklin, the rain had disappeared and the sun shone for the rest of our visit. We joined the other MG Members for a drinks, chat and dinner.
Saturday was the Around the Island Rally and a trip of about 60 miles up and down some of the steepest hills you can imagine, the views from the top of these hills are spectacular both seaward and inland. The route took us through some of the roads the tourist-trails miss on their trips, with lunch organised at The Wight Mouse Inn. Afternoon tea was organised at Calbourn Mill with bantam chickens, ducks and peacocks in attendance waiting for any leftovers. All in all a very good run was enjoyed by all. Sunday morning was the time to say goodbye to most of the other MG Members, whilst some of us stayed on for an extended visit. Thanks to the Vectis MG Club Members for doing all the arrangements for the Island Run, their organisation and friendliness was superb.
