On Sunday the 2nd several of us went along to a very warm Ely Aquafest,
where John had arranged a place for us to park and erect our marquee.
It was a very hot day, perfect for the raft races on the river Ouse, the
beer tent, the band and the majorettes. Oh, and the cars too.
On Monday the 3rd of July we held our Annual Club Fun Concours at the
Cambridge Motel. Plenty of polishing made al the cars look better than
ever, but the fading evening light in the shadow of the tall trees made
it possible for those with less polish to compete evenly. The fun concours
is a self judging event, so no mirrors under looking at polished rust
etc. Dave won the best hardtop prize with 7 points and Rob won the prize
for the best soft top, also with 7 points. Chris won the prize for the
best modern with a whopping 11 points, and Linda the prize for the best
car to take home (6 points).
On July 16th some 14 MGs joined up at the Kimbolton Car Show and County
Fair at Kimbolton School. With July being the hottest on record, many
cars on their way either cooked or nearly cooked their occupants as the
heaters and fans were on maximum to allow the engines to spill as much
heat as possible. Cambridge and District set up their pitch on the grounds
between Ford Capris on one side and BMWs on the other. However, our show
was stolen somewhat by a beautiful 1935 PB which strategically parked
just opposite our pitch and managed to attract most of the admiring public.
The Kimbolton car show is a big event organised by the Rotary Club for
the benefit of various children charities. Many modern and classic cars
participate, including Morgans (there was an Aero 8), kit cars and Lotus
7 derivatives. The car of the show went to an AC Cobra. Apart from cars,
there was a shire horse show, market stalls with books, crafts, clothes
etc., a clay pigeon shoot, an excellent barbeque and much more. The old
school house was open and you could admire a display of 16th and 17th
century maps and pictures. All of us had a great day out.
On 17 July, we had an alternative pub run organised by Pete. This time
we made the leisurely 13 mile evening drive over to The Bell at Wendens
Ambo, where our large contingent challenged the capacity of the kitchen.
It was lovely to sit out in the garden and enjoy the warm July evening
balm. So July 2006 will be remembered as a very good month for us all,
with much action and beautiful weather to enjoy our MGs to the full.
