Pub Run
On Monday 21 August at our weekly meeting at the home pub some eight cars assembled bringing with them an assortment of people to enjoy a evenings drive to an alternative pub. The Woodman at Nuthampstead, the locals say "Numpstead" was the choice of Linda and James, a truly olde English pub with its origins in the 17 Century. We all enjoyed the evening drive of 12 miles to sample the beers and food of ones choice, The Woodman must have been a lively place during the second world war, as the American 398 Bombardment (Heavy) Bomber Group with their B17 Flying Fortresses and the 55th Fighter Group were based there, plenty of memorabilia on the pub walls displayed inside, with a permanent Memorial in the drive leading up to the pub. The air field was short listed for the third London Airport, bad luck Stansted, you won. We all enjoyed the evening at the Woodman and went home in a happy and reflective mood.
Gransden Airshow
On August 27 August we gathered at the Little Gransden aerodrome for a family day out and vintage car show. It being an aerodrome, of course there was plenty of flying also. This was the 14th year of the event which had raised over £50,000 for Children in Need to date. We had to be in place early, so the MGOC Cambridge and District area was filled out by 10:30 with 70 years’ of MGs from between 1935 and 2005. To one side we had Fiat/Lancia as our neighbours and to the other we had a number of BSA motorcycles. There hundreds of vintage vehicles at the show, and they were not all British, with plenty of French, German, Italian, and US cars present too. Around 1 PM the flying started with a spectacular display by champion and local stunt pilot Mark Jefferies in an Elite Twister. This was followed by over 3 and a half hours of solid flying displays with all manner of aircraft, some from WW2 and other more modern craft too. It was wonderful to see these guys do in three dimensions what we love to do with our cars in two, but alas cannot legally. The Aerostars completed the display with 6 aircraft flying in close formation and drawing incredible patterns in the sky. We all enjoyed this day out tremendously.
