Q: I have a '77 MGB which I have owned since 1980. I am replacing the old pitted chrome air intake grille which is located just forward of the windshield. The new one came with a mesh screen that prevents you from installing the hold down press on clips. I see no way to get under the grille with the metal mesh screen in place. How do you suggest securing the grille with a mesh screen?

Don Boudwin

A: The answer is to use inserts that allow you put the grille on from the top without having to get underneath. Called a ‘Blind Fix’ (Moss part number 326-665) they are plastic or nylon fittings that look like mollies you would use on drywall.

They are fitted to the holes in the body that the pins of the grille assembly would go through and normally be secured with clips from underneath (I think there are a total of 6 of them at about $3 for the lot). The pins on the bottom of the grille get pressed into them and the inserts secure it in place with an interference fit.

The grille can also be more easily removed, if necessary, and replaced with the same the inserts.

I hope that helps you. Good luck and stay in touch.
